How did I get here?
When I was in high school, I took the opportunity to try a number of internships within the industry. I was interested in pursuing a career in the actuarial field, but moved to finance when I was given exposure to the Validus Finance department as a summer student.
I was always good at accounting, so I decided to follow the commerce and accounting path in university as it would be applicable anywhere. As a young Bermudian looking to launch my career, the insurance industry made the most sense. When I started as a summer student at Validus, the team allowed me to work on all areas from Sarbanes compliance to researching disclosure requirements for SEC reporting. This allowed me to expand my understanding of all areas of the team, working with people at all levels of the company.
Once I graduated from University, I was offered a job as a Junior Corporate Accountant. When I started at the company, I also started on my way to becoming a fully qualified CPA, which I completed in December 2017.
What am I doing now?
I am currently a Senior accountant in the Validus finance team. I work on the quarterly Validus Re consolidation and the implementation of robotics within the finance function. I have always enjoyed programming, so automation and creating efficiencies in processes has recently become a more formal role. I work with members of finance to help them improve the process themselves, or to build a solution that would make their work a bit easier.
What is a typical day like?
I’m usually on conference calls and working with colleagues from around the world, where we are working towards long term solutions for the finance department.
